However well we plan in advance, it is always daunting to arrive in a half-built hall, surrounded by machinery, pots of paint and lengths of uncut timber, all of which need to be negotiated by precious works of art. As ever, huge thanks to Aston Spinks for their skill, patience and humour.
Although hardly the ‘Antiquary’s Cell’, as we finalised our stand on Saturday evening, we imagined that Jonathan Oldbuck might have felt quite at home. Our dark ‘room’ includes a random assemblage of, mainly nineteenth-century, stained glass, gothic metalwork, Venetian glass, and even old English furniture.
Highlights include a Sienese carved and gilded casket by Gosi & Querci, an 1890s Sèvres vase, and an elegantly-proportioned George II period mahogany writing cabinet, with the kind of surface that would even pass muster with aficionados of eighteenth-century American furniture.
Masterpiece opens to the public on Wednesday 27th June, and closes on Wednesday 4th July. If you happen to be in London over that period, we do hope you will visit.
