Notes
There are several close variants of model 41, the chair designed by Aalto in 1929 and supplied for the Paimio Sanitorium from 1932. Aalto’s design is reproduced in Thomas Kellein, alvar & aino aalto.design: collection bischofberger (Bielefeld, 2005), p. 29 under the heading ‘waves on wooden runners’.
Versions include one with a solid back in black and natural wood runners (Kellein, p. 39); pierced black seat and natural wood runners (Kellein, p. 40), and the same, but with natural seat and black runners (Kellein, 41). A pair with pink seats and natural runners (formerly in the collection of the architect Sir James Stirling (1926-92) is divided between the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
