Notes
Charles Canning Winmill was second in charge of the fire brigade section of the London County Council from its inception in 1899, until his retirement in 1923. He had done his architectural training firstly with John Newman and then in the office of Leonard Stokes, before joining the housing department of the old LCC. Through William Weir, a contemporary in the Stokes office, who left to become an assistant to Philip Webb, Winmill met Webb and George Jack.
Webb was the most significant influence on Winmill’s life and work, and they remained friends until Webb’s death in 1915.
In 1898 Winmill was sent by the committee of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings to make a survey of Bath Abbey. He was joined there by Ernest Gimson, who also became a close friend.

The 1986 catalogue included works by Arthur Gaskin, William Morris, Ernest Gimson, George Jack, Jessie Jack, Peter Waals, Charles Winmill himself, and Fanny Sarah Winmill – all from the same collection.
