Notes
The present clock case, loosely inspired by eighteenth-century French models, has much in common with the series of mirrors exhibited by Barbedienne at successive World’s fairs. The most famous, acquired by Lord Dudley from the Paris Exposition Universelle, 1867, is now at the Bowes Museum.
We have seen only one other comparable, if less ambitious, clock case (present whereabouts unknown). It lacks the contrasting finishes that are also seen on the mirror at the Bowes Museum, and on a mirror exhibited at the London International Exhibition, 1871, now in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay.
