Note
The design is taken from Richard Bridgens, Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration, London: William Pickering, 1838, pl. 39 (see below). This work was first published in 1826.
A pair of Anglo-Indian table, based directly on the same plate, is on the Carlton Hobbs website (ref. 9773).
Richard Bridgens, an artist, architect, sculptor and furniture designer, was associated with the designer and cabinet maker George Bullock (died 1818); see Virginia Glenn, ‘George Bullock, Richard Bridgens and James Watt’s Regency Furnishing Scheme’, Furniture History XV (1979), pp. 54-67.
Bridgens, whose wife inherited sugar plantations, moved to Trinidad in 1826, periodically returning to the United Kingdom. Today he is infamously recalled for his ‘racist perspectives on enslaved Africans and his defence of slavery’; see T. Barringer, G. Forrester, and B. Martinez-Ruiz, Art and Emancipation in Jamaica: Isaac Mendes Belisario and his World, Yale University Press, 2007, pp. 460-461.
