Notes
Benson designed ‘counter-balance’ candlesticks in three models, finished either entirely silvered, in a mixture of brass and copper, or, as here, in brass.
Another, silvered pair, with nozzles rather than pins to hold the candles, belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago (2002.538.1-2). And see Ian Hammerton (ed.), W.A.S. Benson: Arts and Crafts Luminary and Pioneer of Modern Design, Woodbridge, 2005, pl. 98, for a pair in copper and brass.
A second pair, with copper drip pans, is also available
