  • Notes

The present plaque should be compared to two others of the same size, both decorated by Escailler.

The first, dated 1867, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (703-1869); it was acquired from Deck after being shown in the Paris 1867 Exhibition.

The second was included in the seminal exhibition, The Second Empire: Art in France under Napoleon III (1978), no. IV-16, and is dated 1867.  Acquired from Blairman last year for a private collection, this was for decades in the collection of Albert Gallichan and Peter Rose.  It was included in our exhibition Théodore Deck: Céramiste (2000), no. 11 (unillustrated).

All three plaques show the nascent influence of Japanese art.

A fourth 60 cm plaque, dated 1867 and painted by Escailler, is decorated with fruit and leaves; see Stéphane Daniel, ed., Le XIXe Siècle Français, Paris: Libraire Hachette, 1957, unpaginated.
