Notes
Three other vases with the same decoration are recorded: a bone china version on a cream-coloured ground is in the collection of the V&A (C.57-2018) and another belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2021.157.5). A terracotta version, without a foot rim, formerly in the John Scott Collection, now belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia.
This design was shown at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In his 1873 publication, The Principles of Decorative Design, Dresser described the strange horned and winged creature on this vase as ‘Old Bogey’.
