Notes
All but three examples of the ceramics designed by Pugin for Ramsgate were acquired for the Palace of Westminster, in around 1984; they are now kept at Speakers’ House. Another piece is in an English private collection and the third was retained by the recent vendor.
The Latin inscription around the rim is a verse from Psalm 128: Uxor tua sicut / vitis abundans / in lateribus / domus tuae. This translates (in the King James Bible) as ‘Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house’.
